Chivalry
Chivalry was a code of conduct based upon personal honor.
Chivalry originated from the French word “chevalerie” with means to “obtain the skills to handle a horse.” To have the ability to handle a horse, in and out of combat, held the most important to a medieval night. From the middle ages the term “chivalry” began to take on new meanings.
Around the first crusade (1095C.E) the Christianization of knights began. With the crusades as a ‘holy war’ the pope needed the support from the nobles and knights of Europe. The pope need help from them so he could ride out Jerusalem, Islam and returning the ‘Land of Christ’.
In the late Middle Ages all Knights honored and swore to uphold was Chivalry. The code of chivalry was based on a personal honor. By granting the title of Christian warriors to the knights, the people then begun with the growth of the code of conduct that all knights were to follow.
The protection of women and children, and defense of the church are just some examples of the chivalry codes. In combat the nobles and knights were taken prisoner. Their lives were spared but, were often held for ransom in rather comfortable setting. However this some code of conduct didn’t apply to the non-knights, such as archers, peasants and foot-soldiers, who were often slaughtered after captured.
The Code of Chivalry:
" To fear God maintain His Church
To serve the liege lord in valor [bravery] andfaith
To protect the weak and defenseless
To give succor [assistance] to widows and orphans
To refrain from the wanton giving offence
To live by honour and for glory
To despise pecuniary (money) reward
To fight for welfare of all
To obey those placed in authority
To guard the honour of fellow knight
To eschew unfairness, meanness and deceit
To keep faith
At all times speek the truth
To respect the honour of women
Never to refuse a challenge from an equal
Never to turn the back upon a foe (enemy)"
